Devices for Preventive Programs of Geriatric Disease

Abstract

|
It is getting more important to prevent geriatric diseases and to keep activities of daily living after long term care insurance scheme for the elderly started in July 2008. This scheme can helps the elderly improve their health and quality of life. In addition, it reduces health care utilization and long term care utilization so that we can cut down national health expenditure and long term care expenditure. It may also contribute to stabilize the financial burden of insurance.
Public health centers in Korea has been conducting, for the elderly, several health improvement programs like the health screening program, health promotion program, home visiting health service, health care for the disabled, and so on. National Health Insurance Corporation also partly supports health management program for the elderly. In programs for
preventing geriatric diseases, there are many problems like lack of mutual cooperation and connection, lack of specialty, lack of consistency. These programs should focus on the secondary prevention which represses disease progress and the tertiary prevention which refrains the elderly from using long term care insurance more than the primary one.
In conclusion, we should develop evidence-based programs which are based on giving priority to preventing hypertension, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders and dementia, in order to connect public health centers with social welfare institutions. Plus, we should prepare policies for providing services with the elderly, utilizing the health promotion center in National Health Insurance Corporation.
